New market entrants such as GAFAM (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft) developed business models powered by personal data. However, these free digital services turned out to be at the same time powerful weapons of surveillance. The continuous aggregation of personal data allows them to track their users anywhere at any time. In order to confront the conceptual framework with reality, a quantitative study was conducted to understand the online habits and perceptions that individuals have of GAFAM. Résumé : |
The datafication of the world has accelerated with its digitization, leading to the emergence of private actors able to capture its value. New market entrants such as GAFAM (Google, Apple,
Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft) developed business models powered by personal data. However, these free digital services turned out to be at the same time powerful weapons of surveillance. The continuous aggregation of personal data allows them to track their users anywhere at any time. This thesis proposes an analysis of the surveillance and control system set up by digital platforms by mobilizing the concepts of Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze, Antoinette Rouveroy and Shoshana Zuboff, in order to understand its functioning. In order to confront the conceptual framework with reality, a quantitative study was conducted to understand the online habits and perceptions that individuals have of GAFAM. Although the study illustrates the lucidity of users on the need to protect themselves against the risks associated with data extraction, it also highlights the lack of knowledge of alternative solutions and the lack of reflection on individual responsibility in modern surveillance capitalism. |
